3 Tips For Boosting Your Holiday Season Resilience
If you struggle over the holiday season, you aren’t alone.
This is a really hard time of year for many (cold weather, lack of sunlight, more commitments, less sleep, lots of food and drink temptations, family gatherings, etc).
How you approach these challenges can make a big difference for your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

And so, this holiday season, I invite you to give these resilience tips a try:
1. Embrace Your Healthy Habits
No matter what the season, embracing your healthy habits will set you up for a solid foundation.
Here are some recommendations I encourage you to prioritize:
- Be mindful of your physical activity–calendar at least 15 minutes of movement and exercise every day. Physical activity boosts your energy and elevates your mood. Win-win!
- Get enough sleep (7 hrs/night or more).
- Eat some protein and veggies at every meal (and definitely before eating sweets or drinking alcohol).
- Feeling time crunched? Consider taking a break from social media and news. Not all news and updates are useful. You can choose to spend more time on rest or things that feel useful or restorative to you.
- Acknowledge at least 1 specific thing per day that you are grateful for (research shows that being specific makes all the difference).
2. Mind Your Yes’s
Most of us cannot (and should not) say yes to everything we are invited to or asked to do. Be discerning and intentional with what you say yes (and no) to. What are the things that you’d actually like to do with your precious time rather than saying yes out of obligation? Focus on what feels meaningful or enjoyable…what things are you glad that you participate in? Those are the things to say yes to! When you say no to the things that aren’t a fit for you, you say yes to creating more space for the opportunities that are a good fit. Time is a non-renewable resource: spend yours wisely.
3. Choose Quality Over Quantity
This applies to a lot of things over the holidays: food, drink, being social, buying gifts. We have a tendency to fall into the trap that more is better. In many cases, the opposite is true. Explore what choosing quality over quantity feels like. Usually when we are choosing quantity, it’s due to a feeling of lack or scarcity in our lives and we are trying to fill that void…but there are healthier ways to fill this void!
Think of ways that you can expand your feelings of abundance, wholeness, generosity, love, caring, and quality connections.
Seek out quality connections and experiences. But also know that it’s healthy to want to spend some time by yourself! Listen to your inner compass when reaching out and connecting. Quality social connection is healthy. Rest and enough downtime is also healthy.
Seek out quality, nourishing food at mealtimes rather than overeating. When you put together your plate of food, take a moment to appreciate it before eating. Take a moment to appreciate your body, your health, and whatever health goals you are committed to. Savor your food. This means chew it, taste it, and take your time to eat it.
